Authentic Marathi Food at Indian Flavors Restaurant
Update: This restaurant now has a new owner. It is no longer a vegetarian restaurant, but does have vegetarian options. The menu has almost completely changed. The previous owners of Indian Flavors now do catering, but I do not know how to contact them at this time.
My dreams seriously came true when I found this restaurant! Indian Flavors in Westland is the only restaurant I know of in Michigan that serves authentic Marathi (and Gujarati) food. My visits to Pune, India had left me with a serious love for Misal Pav, Bhakri (flat bread made from millet or another grain), Khandvi (Gujarati snack made from gram flour), and many of the other regional foods of the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Not only does this restaurant have delicious foods that you won't find elsewhere, but it has the best owners who are willing to take special orders if you give them advance notice. For example, misal pav is not always on the menu, but if you call a day in advance they can make it for you. (They have to sprout the beans so they need some advance notice.) Also, they are very helpful about letting you know which foods include dairy and can often make these foods without. I would say that they are the best restaurant I know at doing this.

DeleteThis sounds so wonderful. I sometimes think that all Indian restaurants in Germany belong to one franchise system. They always have the same foods. So I never heard of those you mention here. I should consider moving to Michigan.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like that everywhere! Most of the Indian restaurants we have been to around the world (outside of India) have had a lot of the same food. It's always nice when you can get Indian regional foods.
DeleteAfter a trip to India last fall, I haven't found any Indian food in metro Detroit that measures up. I'll have to check this place out on my next IKEA expedition. Thanks!

DeleteIndian foods are really tasty as they vary in flavors widely. To get authentic Marathi or Gujarati foods in other countries is a matter of luck. And I am glad that you found that. Also as they are taking orders in advance, it would be great to eat the food as you want by ordering in advance. No matter wherever the tourists go, they normally tend to love the city by the quality and taste of the food. Personally, I try all the delicious dishes of that local place.
